A light lunch will be served at noon. The program begins at 12:30 p.m. No charge for members. Suggested donation for lunch for non-members: $10.
Dr. Sabetian will be discussing her memoir, Flowers of Kindergarten . Her book reflects on her childhood of displacement and resilience as she fled with her family from Iran, navigated life as a young refugee, and succeeded on her path toward education and career.
Sabetian said she has always had a passion for writing. “I remember writing fiction and nonfiction while in elementary school in Iran. I had always desired to share my experiences as a refugee, and I was inspired by hearing other refugee stories. As a medical student in Boise, Idaho, I was working at a clinic that provided care to an underserved population, including a large refugee community.
“Hearing other refugee experiences deeply resonated with me. This inspired me to share my story. I thought sharing my story in a way is sharing their stories as well.”
Sabetian’s memoir has been well received locally and beyond. “Multiple human and women’s rights advocacy programs and organizations supporting girls’ education have shown interest,” she said.
This is definitely going to be a fascinating presentation! Members should receive an evite in late October. Non Members, please RSVP using the contact form on this website.
